Townscaper VR to Launch on Meta Quest and Pico Platforms
After an initial tease several months ago, Raw Fury is now planning to launch Townscaper VR for Meta Quest and Pico platforms on October 6th.
The city-building game was created by a solo developer Oskar Stalberg and is derived from a flatscreen game that was released in 2021 for Switch, PC and mobile devices.
Townscaper VR utilizes a different approach from other city-building games like Little Cities and Cities: VR in that there is no rigorous city planning involved and there are no specific objectives that players have to meet. Rather, Townscaper VR uses an algorithm to generate stairs, houses, and more. It also easily creates small seaside towns. According to Stålberg, Townscaper is “more of a toy than a game” and describes it as an “experimental passion project.”
The announcement trailer gives only a brief glimpse of the game’s interface. The trailer shows a player pointing at water and creating new buildings using their motion controllers with the trigger serving as an “Add” button.
The analog stick features several labels like ‘remove’, ‘pick color’, and ‘next color’ in different directions. Although direct gameplay wasn’t shared in the trailer, the developer has previously released experimental concept footage earlier in the year.
The flatscreen Townscaper VR was launched on Steam although there is yet to be a confirmation for the PC VR version. There is also no indication on whether a PSVR port of the game might be launched. For the time being, it appears Townscaper VR will remain on standalone virtual platforms Meta Quest and Pico platforms.
