Meta’s HorizonWorkrooms, a metaverse remote work solution, has added major updates including multiple displays for a linked PC or Mac, sticky notes and a lot more.

The Meta Horizon Workrooms is the company’s beta software available on both Quest 2 and Quest Pro. It is a cornerstone for Meta’s future remote work strategy where it is aiming to revolutionize how we work remotely with a metaverse solution. The Workrooms has a number of remote work features. It also supports traditional flat-screen video chat participants. Users in Workrooms who use the app via a VR headset will also perceive some impressive spatial sound. They can even draw their ideas on a desk or shared virtual whiteboard.

Latest update to Horizon Workrooms also brings multi-color sticky notes where participants can sketch. There is also a whiteboard along with breakout groups suited for smaller team discussions that are outside the larger meeting.

Multi-Display PC or Mac in Virtual Reality

The update gives you a solo Personal Office with up to three displays in virtual reality. When using Windows, all the three displays must be physical monitors that are connected to a PC.  If you are using a Mac, only one display needs to be physical and the rest can be virtual. However, Workrooms is promising that virtual screens will “soon” be available on Windows. The online multi-user Rooms in the app are currently supporting just one screen.

According to Meta, the Horizon Workrooms app will also be supporting viewing 3D models in Workrooms from next year. In the next few months, Meta will also integrate with major Microsoft services such as Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Windows 365. In 2021, Meta announced Workrooms integration with Zoom. However, the company is now saying that users will be able join Workrooms through Zoom “early in 2023”.

At the moment, Workrooms is free both Quest 2 and Quest Pro headset owners. The app is already available in some 22 countries. It will be interesting to see the kinds of updates that Meta will be adding to the app as Quest Pro, with its advanced capabilities, comes into the picture.

The third-party apps such as Virtual Desktop and Immersed have also seen large overlaps with Horizon Workrooms. The system level access for features such as the full-color passthrough on Meta Quest Pro will also make it possible for Meta to experiment with new features early on and more frequently.

Horizon Workrooms allows you to import your desk and keyboard into virtual reality. These features will also be available to developers once their implementations in Workrooms have been proven.

Horizon Workrooms will be supporting Meta’s face-tracked avatar tech on the latest Quest Pro headset. At this year’s Connect conference, Meta also teased the “Magic Room” that is designed to facilitate more effective collaboration irrespective of whether the participants are in the same physical room or in remote locations.

The company says it is already experimenting wit5hy Magic Rooms internally and that it is hoping to make this experience more widely available from 2023.
