Coming quick on the back of the Hand Tracking Update 2.0, users can now look forward to the Hand Tracking 2.1 update set to launch soon.

Hand Tracking 2.0 update launched a few months ago unlocked a huge quality leap in optical hand and finger tracking. This provides a more reliable input across the board that is less prone to dropouts and which is capable of detecting partially obscured or fast-moving hands. The Hand king 2.0 update also provides better gesture recognition for gestures such as grasping, pinching and jabbing.

The Importance of Hand Tracking in Virtual Reality

Hand input is, particularly, critical for virtual reality games and apps. Hand Tracking represents the state of the art in VR input, which is intuitive and gives users greater immersion in virtual reality experiences. It allows users to grab or manipulate objects in virtual reality using their actual hands rather than VR controllers. As a result, with hand tracking, users can have a more engaging virtual reality experience that gives them a sense of “ownership” of the experience.

Hand tracking in virtual reality is a fairly recent phenomenon. However, it has fast become an integral feature in the current generations of VR displays. Widespread adoption of hand tracking across the board will enable both hardware engineers and software developers of] VR content to unlock various opportunities in the experiences. It also presents a set of challenges, particularly for the human user. Overall, hand tracking has the potential to add some value to immersive virtual reality.

So far, Meta’s Hand Tracking 2.0 software update has been exclusive to Meta Quest 2. However, the technology began rolling out to the original Meta Quest in October.

The Hand Tracking 2.1 Update

The latest hand-tracking update, the incremental Hand Tracking 2.1 update, was announced at the Meta Connect 2022 conference early this month.

Meta engineer Randi Cabezas, speaking in a developer session, expounded on the range of improvements that the update will bring. These include changes throughout Meta’s tracking stack that will further create better tracking reliability, improve extrapolation and strengthen the pinch gesture detection.

Meta says it has also fast-tracked the reinitialization after dropouts in order to eliminate or minimize tracking interruptions. This leads to fewer overall interruptions and ensures a faster recovery as seen in the video below unveiled during the presentation.

Update to Roll Out Soon

Meta has also introduced a new dedicated AI model that will improve hand pose detection. The artificial neural network in this ensures a more accurate match of the virtual and physical hands. This leads to fewer overshoots along with smoother hand poses according to Cabezas.

Meta has also added improvements to pinch gesture recognition which minimizes erroneous capture, even in strenuous conditions.

Hand Tracking 2.1 will roll out to both Meta Quest 2 and the newly launched Meta Quest Pro before the end of the year.
