The Half-Life remake, Black Mesa, was developed over 15 years and came out in 2020 as a standalone and paid game with the approval of Valve. The game was widely acclaimed by Half-Life fans and critics and had an “overwhelmingly positive” rating from more than 85,000 players on Steam. On Metacritic, it received 84 out of 100 points.

The storyline remains largely the same although the developers have improved and expanded on some of its aspects like the level design, graphics, and gameplay. From the trailer, it appears some of the changes were quite extensive.

Project Steered by Experienced VR Modder

The original 1998 game is already available as a virtual reality mod for Meta Quest 2 and PC VR. However, the enhanced Black Mesa edition isn’t playable in virtual reality yet.

The VR modder Ashok announced that he is working on the Black Mesa VR port. Ashok has also worked closely with the Source VR Mod team that worked on the Half-Life 2: VR Mod.

However, his Black Mesa modding project is unofficial and he is, thus, unaffiliated with the teams behind Black Mesa or the Source VR Mod team. Ashok has previously created a popular pack for Half-Life 2: VR Mod.

Release Date Not Yet Announced

The release date for the Black Mesa VR Mod is yet to be announced. A YouTube video has been shared that shows the project’s current state. The description in the video states that the “vast majority of things work well” at the moment but some “minor issues” remain with some of its performance elements.

The VR mod will reportedly be released around the same time that Episode 2 of Half-Life 2: VR Mod gets released.

Episode 1 is set to be released on March 17 although the release date for the second episode hasn’t been divulged yet.
