The Meta Quest 3 headset can now be used as a 3D camera although the process of doing this remains complex.

The Meta Quest 3 headset leverages two 4-megapixel RGB cameras that capture the physical environment and show it on the screens thus creating the feeling of looking at the real-world environment through the headset.

Users can also use the three sensors to capture a stereoscopic video. Meta doesn’t officially support stereoscopic videos.

You can use the photo gallery app immerGallery to set up the device or correctly record 3D videos. Check out the Youtube video below for a guide on how to set up this: –

You must have a developer account as well as a SideQuest sideloading app. If you are unfamiliar with SideQuest, read the numerous online guides on how to create and install one.

You can use SideQuest to key in a series of ADB commands. Croll down to the bottom of the immerGallery website in the FAQ section to find these commands. Finally, enable the 3D camera function in the immerGallery app.

The application displays a digital water scale with which you can take the best video shots. To take 3D photos, take screenshots of the video captured on your PC and then copy these back to your device. The 3D photos can then be viewed with immerGallery.

The setup process is obviously quite laborious. Hopefully, a future update might simplify the use of the Quest 3 headset as a 3D camera. Perhaps, Meta may even build its own camera app that seamlessly integrates into its virtual reality ecosystem.

According to immerGallery, a dedicated 3D camera offers users a high-quality experience and is also easy to use. However, it can still serve beginners in 3D photos and video capture who wish to experiment with 3D cameras on their Quest 3 headsets.

The 3D camera feature will be available on the Apple Vision Pro headset out of the box. Due to its superior sensors, the headset is also well suited for this kind of use case.

ImmerGallery is available on AppLab for just $15.
