Varjo Aero Headset Discontinued But Support to Run to 2025
Varjo is no longer selling its high-end virtual reality headset the Varjo Aero on its official webstore.
The Varjo Aero headset was the company’s first official consumer-oriented headset and was launched in 2021. The headset still has one of the highest resolutions for a PC VR headset with 2,880 x 2,720 pixels per eye making it suitable for sim fans with equally powerful computers.
In a statement, the company clarified that its webstore inventory of the Varjo Aero headsets was now “permanently sold out” although the headset is still available for sale through its selected retailers across the globe. Varjo also stated it would be supporting the headset “through the end of 2025.” The company stated that it is now focusing its manufacturing efforts on the production of the XR-4 series of headsets, its latest professional-grade virtual reality and mixed reality headsets that it announced in November last year.
Although the Varjo Aero headset offers impressive image quality, reviewers have cited some shortcomings in the headset like the distortion seen at the edges of the images or the fact that the headset lacks an integrated audio solution.
At launch, the Varjo Aero headset was priced at $2,000 (price not inclusive of the base station and the virtual reality controller). In September 2023, the company halved the headset’s price in a bid to clear its inventory.
A statement from Varjo implies the XR company is planning to focus on its B2B business for now. Varjo’s new XR-4 series retails from $4,000 and will initially target corporate customers.
It isn’t clear whether Varjo is planning a successor to Varjo Aero. It didn’t perform well enough to feature in Valve’s SteamVR stats.
