The Verge is reporting that VR arcade brand The Void could be teasing a 2024 comeback.

According to the report, The Void posted videos on its official YouTube channel that offer hints it could be planning something this year. The videos themselves only show footage and past testimonials from The Avengers and Star Wars arcade-based virtual reality experiences. However, given that the VR arcade’s new owners, Hyper Reality Partners, recently raised funds to the tune of $20 million, they could be throwing hints to the fans of the VR arcade experience that they could expect something this year.

The Void was a major player in the virtual reality entertainment scene with its location-based experiences pre-COVID-19. The subsequent lockdowns wiped out much of its business almost dealing the company a death knell as it closed many of its locations.

Following a default on a loan, the company lost its anchor partner Disney, and its intellectual property assets were assigned to a creditor in 2020, at the height of the pandemic.

In 2021, The Void’s assets were acquired by Hyper Reality which is spearheaded by a former investor in the VR arcade, Adrian Steckel.

When it acquired the arcade’s assets and IP two years ago, Hyper Reality stated that The Void was going into “a period of rapid expansion” and was set to “shape the future of VR and the entire entertainment industry.”

Almost three years later, it appears the company is finally ready for its much-awaited relaunch.

In 2021, Protocol reported that The Void would be shifting its location-based entertainment experiences from the pre-existing malls it had long relied on to expansive standalone entertainment complexes. The report also added the VR arcade could change its hardware after it sold off most of its previous hardware. In the intervening period, the VR hardware market has also undergone a technological leap with more powerful standalone hardware now dominating the experiences.
