Gesture VR

Gesture VR is the creation of Canadian illustrator and 3D artist Nick Ladd, who defines the app in the following manner:

Gesture VR is a drawing application focusing on figure drawing, providing artists with a private virtual studio to enhance their skills, regardless of their expertise level. Whether beginners or professionals, users can refine their drawing skills anytime and anywhere. Artists have the option to sketch on a digital 2D surface or immerse themselves in a 3D environment. Featuring top-notch photogrammetry scans of actual models, the app enables users to customize lighting, rotation, and pose durations. Whether solo or with friends, artists can draw alone or invite up to three companions to join them.

The app has the following features: –

  • Sketch with pressure-sensitive strokes to achieve dynamic thickness and shading in both 2D and 3D modes.
  • Enable passthrough to seamlessly integrate virtual models with your physical drawing area, enabling you to sketch with a real pen and paper while incorporating digital elements.
  • The app boasts a collection of over 200 models, featuring numerous 3D scans of professional models representing diverse age groups and body types. Additionally, users can access various miscellaneous models such as a skeleton, horse, statues, and anatomy guides.
  • Select from three distinct environments: the traditional art studio, the white void, and the black void. The traditional studio mirrors real figure drawing classrooms, furnished with decorative objects ideal for artistic studies.
  • Each time you launch Gesture VR, a new page is added to your expanding sketchbook. You have the flexibility to append or remove pages from this sketchbook and revisit previous drawings at any time.
  • Embracing the essence of a genuine figure drawing class, you have the opportunity to connect with up to three fellow artists and draw simultaneously, whether focusing on the same model or different ones. This collaborative feature facilitates showcasing your sketches, practicing together, sharing tips and tricks, and simply enjoying a relaxed creative atmosphere.
  • Art pieces crafted within Gesture VR can be captured as 2D snapshots using the in-app camera or exported as PNG files, readily shareable across online platforms.
  • A compilation of drawing tutorials led by globally recognized art instructor Stan Prokopenko.

This virtual drawing tool can be a great substitute for the traditional drawing classes that are usually expensive, based on rigid schedules, and largely inaccessible to the majority of potential learners. The developer says it built the app to take full advantage of virtual reality’s immersive power, thereby removing the barriers of time, location, and cost that are often a hindrance to the attendance of figure drawing lessons.

Gesture VR will transition from App Lab to the Quest Store on March 21, 2024, offering compatibility with Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. The app will be priced at $14. Additionally, new content will be integrated into the Vive and Steam versions.
