China-based internet technology company ByteDance and its XR subsidiary Pico have confirmed that its next headset will be launched this week, with many analysts having narrowed down the date to 20th August.

A fortnight ago, Pico announced a product launch event scheduled for August 20. Subsequent social posts hint at a new headset being launched at the event. According to new social media posts, the launch event will only happen in China, and launches in other countries and regions will be announced later.

The social media post named the headset to be launched as Pico 4 Ultra, a name that also appears in an image, supposedly of the headset, that recently leaked on Chinese social media. That could be the name it retails within the Chinese market and the headset might retail with a different brand name elsewhere. In March this year, ByteDance trademarked the name “Pico 4S”. Icons of ringless “4S” controllers have also been spotted in the Pico Connect PC VR streaming software.

Confusion over its naming aside, leaks have emerged over the past year that hint at some of the headset’s specifications.

In September last year, images emerged on Chinese social media that seemingly showed new ringless Pico controllers.

In December last year, The Information reported that the company had canceled its new Pico 5 headset because Pico 4 headset sales had fallen below expectations. Consequently, it was planning a new ambitious, and refreshed version of the Pico 4 headset.

In June, the first leaked specs surfaced via a Geekbench result, suggesting the headset will have the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset as the Meta Quest 3, but with 12GB of RAM, compared to the Quest 3’s 8GB.

A few weeks later, a new Pico headset was certified by South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency (RRA). The filing disclosed that the headset supports 6GHz Wi-Fi, indicating it is equipped with either Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7.

Recently, several official-looking renders of the headset along with its official carrying case accessory were leaked.

We’ll keep a close watch on ByteDance in the coming weeks for any additional hints or leaks about the next Pico headset and will provide full coverage of the company’s China launch event on August 20.
