Meta Scraps Plans for Premium Apple Vision Pro Competitor
A new report by The Information states that Meta bosses scrapped the development of the high-end Meta Quest Pro 2, codenamed La Jolla, during a product review meeting last week.
The Meta Quest Pro 2 is a premium headset that was being built as a competitor to the ultra-high-end Apple Vision Pro headset. The decision to cancel the headset was made during a product review meeting in which Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Bosworth, and other top Meta executives were present.
Meta engineers codenamed the planned high-end headset La Jolla, keeping with the tradition of naming XR products under development after small cities in California. Work on the device began in November 2023 and release was planned for 2027.
The headset was to use OLED microdisplays, which are also used in the Apple Vision Pro headset. However, Meta struggled with the conundrum of integrating the micro-OLED technology into the product while still keeping prices below $1000. The company has been keen to keep the prices of its headsets below $1000 following the flop of its Quest Pro headset whose price was slashed from $1500 to $1000 following widespread criticism and low sales during rollout.
According to The Information, Meta is still planning to use the technology it developed for the La Jolla headset such as the display and eye-tracking technologies in its other upcoming devices.
Meta is also still working on its other lower and mid-range headsets such as the next-generation Quest 4 headset, planned for release in 2026.
