BBC is planning to do a countrywide tour where it will be showcasing demo sessions of virtual reality across UK libraries in a bid to introduce virtual reality to people who have never used it before.

BBC plans to include various VR experiences in the demonstrations including a documentary series that is set in the DR Congo as well as a VR on the Lancaster bomber which reconstructs his air raids on Berlin during WWII.

The VR headsets will be showcased in more than 40 libraries across the UK as part of the BBC VR Hub programme. Visitors at the libraries will also get an opportunity to try out the various VR experiences, one of which will be BBC’s short VR-based sitcom People Just Do Nothing.

The virtual reality demo tour starts on Friday with various libraries in Lancashire including Eccleston, Tarleton, Adlington and Skelmersdale. From there the tour will move to Nuneaton, Leeds, Dundee and various other locations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

For much of the 20th century, the traditional library was the repository of information and learning but in the age of the internet and virtual reality, the traditional library is becoming antiquated as people are able to easily access books and information on the internet. However, even in the fast-paced modern world, the traditional library still plays a crucial role. Apart from promoting virtual reality to people who have never encountered the technology before, the BBC effort is also geared at helping people rediscover the magic of the library. Through VR, BBC will be adding a futuristic 21st century flavor to the library experience.

The BBC Hub VR team will offer audiences a good mix of virtual reality experiences. The tour will stream three titles:-

  • 1943 Berlin Blitz
  • People Just Do Nothing
  • Congo VR

The 1943 Berlin Blitz takes viewers to one of the darkest chapters of human history: The Second World War and the blitz on Berlin. Relieve history in virtual reality as you get on a Berlin bombing mission as Wynford Vaughan-Thomas, the BBC war correspondent who covered a bombing run in 1943 and sound recordist Reg Pidsley as they document a genuine bombing run over the city in WWII.

People Just Do Nothing is a light-hearted 360-degree rendition of the popular comedy series while Congo VR takes you on a three-part news documentary series with the BBC correspondent Alastair Leithead on a reporting assignment in the Congo. The Congo VR was released in 2018 and is available on the BBC VR app on both the Oculus GO and Samsung Gear VR headset.

BBC hopes to give everyone an opportunity to try out virtual reality by showcasing some of the popular experiences in libraries across the UK. The broadcaster will update an online schedule every week with details on the location of the VR demo tours.
