SteamVR Hardware and Software Survey for September 2019: Rift S and Valve Index Continue to Rise
The most recent Steam Hardware Survey indicates that the number of Oculus Rift S and Valve Index users continued to rise during the month of September with the other virtual reality headsets continuing to lose out in the rankings.
The Oculus Rift S market share rose to 13%. The high-end Valve Index virtual reality headsets are now scraping at just 5% mark. To an extent, this bump was expected as the headsets were only released in May and June of this year.
The big losers of the month are HTC Vive which has lost nearly 3% in market share; the Windows Mixed Reality headset which has lost 2% as well as the Oculus Rift headset which has lost more than 1% in market share.
This month, HTC Vive will be replaced by the Vive Cosmos headset. The Oculus Rift market share is already being chipped away by its successor the Oculus Rift S headset. The Windows Mixed Reality headset has largely fallen off the rails and the high-resolution HP Reverb headset will unlikely to alter that.
The table below provides an overview of the hardware rankings for the months of August and September. The tabular overview provides a percentage of the virtual reality headsets connected to PCs whose users participated in the Steam Hardware Survey. The survey does not capture the usage stats for the other virtual reality platforms such as those on the Oculus ecosystem and Viveport along with the standalone virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Quest.
