During its Q3 Earnings Call on Friday, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the Oculus Quest 2 pre-orders were over five times more than the pre-orders for the original Oculus Quest headset.

Virtual reality did not take the centerstage of Facebook earnings call as it still represents a very small portion of Facebook’s earnings as well as of its overall business strategy. Also, Facebook did not reveal anything about the Quest 2’s launch performance as the headset only officially launched in Q4. However, the Q3 period covered much of the pre-order period for the new standalone virtual reality headset and based on this, Facebook revealed that the headset performed five times better than the pre-orders for the original Quest standalone VR headset.

The full quote from Zuckerberg regarding the performance of the new headset goes as follows: –

This quarter we also took major steps forward in building the next computing platform. We launched Quest 2, our most advanced virtual reality headset, right in time for the holidays. It delivers a real sense of presence — like you’re right there with another person or in another place — and we’ve worked to make it accessible to more people.

It’s lighter, faster, has a sharper screen, and a new price point of just $300. Pre-orders have outpaced the original Quest pre-orders by more than 5x and have surpassed our expectations.

Down in the line in the document, Facebook also stated that the Quest 2 headset should have an impact on the company’s Q4 earnings. According to Facebook, the Quest 2 orders have been strong and this should have an impact on the “Other Revenue [in Q4].”

This corroborates Facebook’s earlier statement that Quest 2 was selling “faster than expected” and beyond Facebook’s expectations. You can read more about that here.
