Home improvement retailer Lowe’s has availed more than 500 3D assets in its metaverse hub that represent the products it stocks in its retail outlets. Customers or prospective buyers can use these 3D assets to visualize Lowe’s building projects.

Lowe’s has launched Lowe’s Open Builder portal that gives users over 500 3D assets representing Lowe’s stocks of products. The home improvement company is granting unrestricted reuse of these assets in the metaverse.

Lowe’s is the first home improvement company to open up its product inventory to builders in the metaverse. However, we will soon see similar projects launch in the metaverse for builders to tap into. Both IKEA and Home Depot are currently working on 3D design projects for their brands.

Lowe’s new asset hub features a selection of the company’s product portfolio such as patio furniture, kitchen and bath accessories, area rugs, and décor accents.

Each of these 3D assets is rendered in ISD and glTF formats which enable creators to bring the assets into popular metaverse and non-metaverse environments for diverse use-cases including gaming, creative design and augmented reality.

Lowe’s says the launch of these 3D assets is an extension of what the company is already doing across other channels. The 3D assets in the metaverse will also enable Lowe’s to explore how it can leverage customers’ creative inspirations to attract more attention to the brand and to help improve customer and employee experience.

Lowe’s has been developing these 3D assets for quite some time now, primarily for use in its existing home improvement workflows. The home improvement company has other apps that are used to capture data about a home for use in visualizing and planning home improvement projects such as when designing a new kitchen or bathroom or when you want to visualize how new paint and flooring will look like when finished.

Lowe’s is also employing digital twins for use in better store planning and layouts with interactive 3D planograms. Lowe’s CIO Seemantini Godbole says this is almost like PowerPoint where you can drag and drop the assets on your slides to figure out how the planogram will look like before and after.

Creating 3D Workflows

Lowe’s has been developing 3D technologies over the past 18 months. The company says it pays as much attention to the new virtual assets as it did to the development of the technology along with the process foundation for its new 3D efforts.

Lowe’s Open Builder, for instance, leverages 3D assets that the company had previously created for its other home improvement apps. The company has been able to reuse these assets in its latest app.

Lowe’s says the creation process also relied on customer research and experience design work.
