The Hand Tracking 2.0 update will come to the original Oculus Quest headset next month.

Hand Tracking 2.0 Update was added to Quest 2 in May this year. The update added dramatic improvements in the use of hands without the controllers.

When it arrived in May, Meta had stated that its researchers and engineers had built a new technique for applying deep learning for the improved understanding of hand poses when the cameras in a device cannot ‘see’ the user’s full hand or when the hand is moving too fast. According to Meta, the update brought a “step-function improvement in tracking continuity”. It was also said at the time that Hand Tracking 2.0 was realizable because of the Snapdragon XR2 chip. However, its rollout into the original Oculus Quest shows that was not actually the case.

In perfect lighting conditions, the new hand tracking mode can even capture hands that move too quickly or where hands are touching or covering one another. Previously, such complex scenarios degraded the quality of the tracking causing it to break. The new tracking mode now makes Hand Tracking more practical to apply and allows for new actions such as counting fingers and clapping.

Hand Tracking 2.0 mode is available as an opt-in developer-side upgrade. However, it is supported by almost all apps including Hand Physics Lab, Cubism, and Unplugged: Air Guitar. The feature is an opt-in because some of the older apps were based on developer-crafted hand-tracking quality filtering algorithms to iron out some of the issues that were in Hand Tracking 1.0.

Hand Tracking 2.0 will be default in all apps that have not opted out explicitly, from December this year. In April next year, this will be the only hand tracking mode and all apps will use it automatically.
