Is there any room for controllers in virtual reality?
The normal input devices for playing video games include a controller, keyboard and mouse, and touch-screen. All are flawed when it comes to virtual reality and Oculus knows, which is why they are developing a new type of input device.
Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus, has said briefly at events the team is working on a new input device. Like most Oculus projects, there is no date of arrival and more than likely we will see a prototype, when they are ready to announce the device.
What is the device? Well, Luckey has not mentioned much. He said it would need to use haptic feedback, allowing a more immersive experience. It might also use biometric feedback, to create a more dynamic rule set when it comes to games.
This controller could be implemented into the headset, eye and head movement could work as factors, although this still would not fix games where players need to shoot things, or drive, or run, all things that rely on more than one button.
Still, Oculus’ end goal might not be video games, but experiences. If this is the case – the headset could act as the main controller, allowing users to walk with eye movement and turn their head by…turning their head.
It is hard to make a reference for the future of input devices on virtual reality, which may be why Oculus is not ready to reveal anything. Making a controller will take time a lot of Q&A, to see if the experience and feedback beats a controller.
One thing is for certain, we cannot continue to plug in an Xbox 360 controller or use only our head movements to control virtual reality games. There needs to be a more advanced input device, capable of fully understanding the virtual reality world.
