VR Chat

Applications and engines developed for virtual reality are now progressing to encompass social media platforms. One such example is the newly launched ‘VR Chat’.

VR Chat has been generating a lot of attention in the technology field and has quickly shot up to be one of the most promising applications in recent times. The social media platform can be accessed using Oculus Rift’s virtual reality headset. VR Chat was also nominated for one of the award categories at the very first Virtual Reality Awards (VRA), going up against applications like Titans of Space and Riftmax Theater. Surprisingly, VR Chat bagged the reward for Best Non-Game Application at the awards. The social media platform has been available for download for quite some time now, but has only been recently added to the list of downloadable applications on the Oculus Share website.

VR Chat has been created by using the Unity 3D engine and is a platform for users to meet online and chat with each other in environments they have made themselves. The software has made it easy for developers to add more than one user to any video game or other application, provided they are of the Unity-developed environments. The software used by the developers takes its cues from an amalgamation of different things: head gaze direction, body gestures and 3D positional audio to do its best to develop an immersive, fun social experience for all users involved.

VR Chat has a very diverse platform for all kinds of interactions. Developers have claimed that it is the space to use for playing games, having business discussions, looking around for entertaining ways to pass the time or just creating a social hangout with your friends. Exploring the virtual world in 3D with your favorite people and a customized environment is a very attractive package.

The application was launched in January this year, by Graham Gaylor and Jesse Joudrey (the latter joining in shortly after the initial idea was discussed). Ever since the official release, both of the creators have been consistently updating the application with feedback given by users on virtual reality platforms. They are also looking to hire creators who want to work within VR Chat, which is why their software development kit is available for download on the official website. VR Chat is compatible with both PC and Mac along with the first and second development kits by Oculus Rift (DK1 and DK2, respectively).
