Virtual Reality is Now More Accessible to the Masses

“Today we are excited to introduce a new feature in SteamVR Beta that allows customers to get the best visual experience out of their GPU, lowers the cost of VR, and makes developer’s lives a little bit easier.” Says Alex Vlachos from Steam. “We’re doing this by custom-tuning application resolution so that it is optimal for each customer’s GPU and VR headset.”

Valve updates the SteamVR making it more easily for lower-performance GPUs to run VR applications thanks to its new feature that automatically sets your VR headset resolution to match your PC capabilities. The feature works like an autofocus changing the graphical settings automatically for you and making sure that the content may be enjoyed at the best possible resolution. This will not only help gamers enjoy their VR experiences accordingly but will also make Virtual Reality more accessible because it helps users with low-end GPUs set the settings in their favor, allowing them to experience VR in more affordable setups.

Whether your setup needs a higher or lower resolution, the process is the same. SteamVR runtime is able to measure your GPU processing power and instruct software applications to render at the most appropriate resolution your PC can handle. SteamVR will reduce the resolution for players with GPUs that aren’t able to render their headset’s native resolution but never lower than the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive’s native resolution.

SteamVR is making good progress by adding useful features like this one, a YouTube 360 video app and support for Windows Mixed Reality headsets. The auto resolution feature is still in beta, but you can opt-in to try it. Look for SteamVR in the Steam Library under Tools and hit the right click to find ‘Beta’ in properties.
