Superhot VR Grosses More Revenues than the Original Non-VR Version
Superhot VR has now sold more than 800,000 copies across all virtual reality platforms, outperforming the original non-virtual reality predecessor in terms of revenues less than two years after the launch of the virtual reality game. This has been revealed via a tweet by Callum Underwood who currently works with Raw Fury, the game’s publisher.

It’s a major milestone for any virtual reality title and is an especially incredible performance for an indie game. Superhot is a stylistic first-person shooter game where the time only moves when the player moves and first came out in 2016. Superhot VR came out in early 2017, one year after the launch of the classic version, as an Oculus Rift Exclusive and was later released for other virtual reality platforms such as Widows Mixed Reality, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive in 2017. Superhot VR will also be a launch title for the upcoming Oculus Quest virtual reality headset.
The game appears to be made for virtual reality experience. It is an FPS game with an interesting twist whereby the game world will only move when the player moves. If the player stays still, then everything in the game simply freezes including time and the bullets. This allows the player to carefully plan out their next move. If the player performs any action, the game will begin moving once more. Playing Superhot VR is like yanking out the best scenes out of Max, the Matrix and Payne’s Bullet Time and spreading them out through the entire VR game.
The just released stats on the Superhot VR’s game performance over the past two years do not provide a platform-by-platform breakdown over the years but the game has been listed among PlayStation’s best-selling PSVR games in 2018 just behind Beat Saber and Job Simulator so it is certainly popular choice with many users.
According to SteamSpy, Superhot VR sold between 100,000 and 200,000 units on Steam so the bulk of sales seem to have come from owners using PlayStation VR.
Superhot VR is also one of the rarest examples of a title that has seen some great success after its reincarnation into the virtual reality format. With its inclusion as a launch title in the upcoming standalone Oculus Quest virtual reality headset, expect the game’s sales and revenues to shoot up even further.
However, in spite of Superhot VR surpassing the original non-VR version in terms of revenues, the latter has actually sold more copies. Based on data by SteamSpy, the original Superhot is currently owned by between 1 and 2 million users on Steam alone and the game is also available on PS4 and Xbox One.
The Superhot VR may have made more money than the Superhot classic version probably due to bundles, sales or the fact that a huge chunk of its player count came from Kickstarter backers.
