Youtube VR has been confirmed as one of the launch titles that will be available on Oculus Quest when it ships next Tuesday, May 21st. With a repository of more than one million public VR videos, the addition of Youtube dramatically expands the scope of virtual reality content that users will be able to experience with the Quest headset. Youtube will provide users with access to 360-degree videos along with the traditional 2D videos. So if you will be having Quest and wondering what you can actually do with it beyond the limited range of 60 launch titles, the Youtube VR app will be a good starting point with its extensive range of content.

As part of the Quest starting lineup, Youtube VR will also join other highly anticipated apps such as the painting tool Tilt Brush along with the Job Simulator. The sequel to the Job Simulator, the Vacation Simulator will be launching on Quest later in the year.

The Youtube VR app has already been released for other popular headsets including PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, the Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Go and of course, on Google’s own Daydream View platform.

Youtube VR offers users not just rich content but also very rich sets of features for interacting with the content such as the ability to search the content by voice. You can also access both the VR and non-VR content through the use of a VR-optimized interface. The Youtube VR platform will offer Quest users access to millions of standard rectangular videos. On top of this, users will also gain access to more than one million stereoscopic 3D videos that offer panoramic 360-degree support plus the depth-based and distance-based spatial audio.

The app has received excellent reviews from users on Oculus Go with many praising the ease with which you can access content on the app while having issue with the 60Hz frame rate limitation. Users also have issue with the app’s limited functionality and the fact that it does not offer adequate support for side-by-side videos. On Quest, the app will run the same frame rate and provide support for room-scale tracking thereby offering users better freedom of motion in virtual reality environments. It’s however not yet clear how much the Quest version of the app will be different from the Go version.

Google’s Youtube VR app offers some high-quality content, many of which have already racked up some top awards. The content range is also expanding rapidly as Youtube currently has programs geared at making virtual reality content creation more accessible. The Youtube VR Creator Lab is currently expanding to Europe and accepting applications from potential creators. Many budding creators from Europe can now apply for the Youtube VR creator lab to familiarize themselves with the VR180 standard and cameras along with $20,000 in funding for the production of a virtual reality video.

Some of Youtube VR’s projects that have scored top awards in the past six months include Crow: The Legend, an animated experience that was voiced by Oprah Winfrey and John Legend and which won an Emmy Award. There were also Emmy awards for NASA’s Cassini’s Grand Finale 360-degree videos and its first 360-degree livestream. Other award-winning Youtube VR content include the Isle of Dogs: Behind the Scenes (in VR) which has won the Clio Entertainment Gold Award and two Webby Awards.
