Insta Has Began Shipping the Titan 360 Camera for $15,000
One of the highlights of the CES 2019 event in Las Vegas was Insta360’s announcement that it had already opened the pre-orders for its Insta360 Titan professional 360-degree camera. Now the company has officially launched the cameras and begun shipping them to its customers globally.
The Insta360 Titan camera will carry a hefty price tag of $15,000 and packs some premium features for end users. It is aimed at the high-end enterprise market. The camera is a unibody and is built with eight 200° F3.2 fisheye lenses that are equipped with Micro Four Thirds sensors which can record 11K footage according to the claims by the company. It has various shooting modes including 11K at 30 FPS, 10K 3D at 30 FPS, 11K 360 photos in 3D along with the monoscopic formats.
The inside of the camera also includes some really impressive tech such as FlowState Stabilization functionality that enables users to have a gimbal-like stabilization of camera without the need to use any additional stabilization gear. This also means that creators won’t have to grapple with any substantial post-production editing and stitching work.
Directors have long grappled with the issue of being seen in 360 footage when the camera is recording. This can be quite difficult when you are recording at 360 with your camera. To help solve this, Insta incorporated the Farsight live monitoring system which allows content creators to have a longer range and low latency preview so as to direct the scenes unseen.
The hardware company says it worked with virtual reality creators to develop hardware platforms that users need through the cinematic quality of the Titan and the versatility of the Insta360 Pro series. Instead of rolling out new professional cameras, the company will be focusing on roping in users into the Titan and Pro series cameras and giving them an even better edge through new updates and integrations with some of the key ecosystem partners.
While an 11K resolution might sound quite impressive as far as quality is concerned, some of the video websites such as YouTube will only offer you up to 8K resolution. So while you might own a Titan camera with a superb 11K resolution content, you still have to grapple with the limitations of YouTube content resolution. However, Insta360 has developed the proprietary CrystalView player that allows users to view their Titan footage at its full 11K quality on Android or iOS devices. To implement this on mobile devices, Insta360 is leveraging something akin to foveated rendering where only the part of the scene that the viewer is watching is rendered while the rest is masked behind their heads. This allows for very high resolution to be rendered on mobile devices whose specs might not necessarily support the ultra-high Titan resolutions.
