The location-based virtual reality startup Imverse is teaming up with the creator of MacGyver Lee David Zlotoff and the director of the “Lawnmower Man” Brett Leonard to unveil a MacGyver-themed virtual reality escape room. The MacGyverWorld is being produced by Mark Richard (Studio Lightship) and will be debuting in 2020.

The MacGyver Escape Room experience will be leveraging the Imverse 3D capture technology which will be scanning the participants before they get into MacGyverWorld.  When a user looks at their friends, they will be able to see their holograms.

MacGyver makes for a great franchise for merging location-based virtual reality experiences with the escape room concept. The MacGyver character will be an easy fit and can also be instrumental in shaping users’ expectations.

Imverse will be showcasing some of the technology at the Siggraph which takes place in Los Angeles this week. According to Imverse co-founder and CEO Javier Bello Ruiz, the company wants to position its product somewhere between the high-end location-based virtual reality startups such as The Void and Dreamscape and the mass market virtual reality arcades.

Part of the strategy the company will to accomplish this will involve opening up a flagship location in 2020 and the company will subsequently license its technology (including its volumetric holographic capture technology) and content to the operators of virtual reality centers. Expect to see the company’s volumetric capture stage at a virtual reality arcade near you soon.
