Luxury auto brand Bentley is the latest automaker to jump on the augmented reality train. Last week, the company released an augmented reality app known as Bentley 100 AR for its EXP 100 GT Concept. Bentley has more than 100 years of automotive excellence. It belongs to the old school of automotive luxury alongside brands such as Rolls Royce.

Through its new concept car, Bentley is trying to chart a path into the future. To go with theme of a future-focused vision, the luxury automaker is tapping into an equally future-forward technology to showcase its latest concept car: augmented reality.

The Bentley 100 AR app is currently only available on Apple devices and enables users to get behind the wheels of the concept car by simply scanning a QR code. It includes a full 3D of the EXP 100 GT concept car interior as well as the exterior. Users at Bentley dealers will be able to view a full-scale virtual model of the vehicle. The display will also include commentary from the team that designed the concept car. Users will be able to download a 3:4 scale as well as “desktop” models of the concept from the comfort of their homes.

Bentley is joining a growing trend by automakers that use augmented reality in vehicle design, manufacturing, marketing and exhibition functions. Increasingly, AR is becoming a choice promotional tool that enables customers to overlay digital images of cars they are about to purchase in their surroundings thereby saving them trips to dealerships.

The Bentley 100 AR app enables end users to get a very good look of the concept car. The image overlaid is still a miniaturized version of the car but it still packs up enough visual detail.

The Bentley AR app provides a very smooth interface and includes a voice-guided tour of the car that lists the vehicle’s features.

The app is able to realize this even though it’s a clunky old school tool that still relies on printing a QR code. To get to the app, the user must print out a paper graphic marker that will be the anchor point for the augmented reality car. This is classic old-school AR.

The app won’t work even when the user points their smartphone camera onto a high-res MacBook retina display. They have to literally print out the QR code. This is still a clunky and low-tech functionality, one that has been surpassed by more elegant implementations. It’s also a waste of paper and ink!

The Bentley EXP 100 GT is still a concept car so the augmented reality implementation is the only way through which end users can get a glimpse of the vehicle. Some Bentley showrooms across the world will have their own unique QR code on their showrooms that users will be able to scan to unlock a full-scale 3D model of the concept car.

The concept car is fairly advanced. It’s all-electric and has been inspired by the company’s understanding of the “desires of intelligent and forward-thinking customers”. Bentley has also stated that the vehicle embraces artificial intelligence as a way of reasserting the car as a place where one can create, experience and capture “extraordinary human experiences and emotions”. The concept car also has a self-driving mode and is capable of going from 0 to 60mph in less than 2.5 seconds. It reaches a top speed of 186mph.

The integrated artificial intelligence (AI) in the vehicle doesn’t just drive it when the driver prefers a hands-free experience but it also makes use of biometric sensors in determining the most comfortable seating positions. It is also able to track the passenger eye movements, blood pressure as well as the body temperature.

It’s not yet apparent when functionalities such as the biometric sensors or the tracking of users’ blood pressure will come into effect although a Bentley production model will hit the market by 2025.
