HP Reverb Returning Soon as Technical Issues Have Been Resolved
The initial rollout of HP’s high-definition Windows VR headsets –the HP Reverb-had been hampered by display issues and stock shortages. The company now says that those issues have been identified and resolved and that it will begin bringing the new inventory back in stock.
According to HP, customers will begin seeing the new inventory on its website as well as via its official retail partners’ outlets. The Reverb Professional Edition is already in stock in the HP US store. However, the Amazon US website is displaying expected availability of the Reverb Customer Edition by September 25th. While the headset was initially available on Best Buy, it is currently not displaying any new listings.
Display Errors Fixed
The headset should have began shipping in May but HP rolled back the inventory in the short term after users and tech news outlets began reporting display issues such as flickering, stripes or blank screens. The headsets were taken back into development to fix the technical issues.
HP says it managed to identify those technical issues that caused the displays in some of its headsets to show stripes, flicker or even go totally blank. The blank screens were mainly caused by the headset’s breakaway cable connector which did not maintain a firm connection in some of the headsets. The flickering and other display issues were caused by some of the internal components failing to function as expected. According to HP, these technical issues were caused by inconsistencies in the manufacturing as well as the use of certain batches of components with tolerances which were larger than expected.
As it identified these issues, HP had pulled the stock back from its retail partners. The company now asserts that all the new Reverb inventory that will be sold via official channels will be fully fixed and will not have these issues.
When these technical issues came up, HP didn’t go to the full extent of recalling the Reverb headsets that it had already sold to end users. It has asked customers who already purchased the headset and are facing these technical issues to contact HP support. The company also says that it has specifically briefed all the support teams on the issues. HP has also run long-term tests on the batch of headsets that had the issues and says that it is not expecting the initial batch of Reverb headsets that had been shipped to customers to develop these issues over the long run.
The company has also implemented new procedures in manufacturing to ensure that these issues do not recur and has assured that customers can purchase the headsets with confidence from now on.
The HP Reverb is a very high-spec and high-definition virtual reality headset. It particularly has a very high-resolution display with 2160 by 2060 per eye as well as a full RGB subpixel structure. With its new lenses, it provides probably the clearest and sharpest display in the market currently. No headset can match at its high specs at this time.
HP engineers also designed it with wearing comfort and ease of use. It has integrated or in-built headphones. The main vulnerability for the headset at this time is its Windows tracking system which still delivers some solid function but is not entirely immune from dropouts.
