Snap’s Improved Lens Studio Now Lets Everyone Create AR Filters Easily
Just a few days after Facebook’s release of the Augmented Reality Filtering Software Spark AR for Instagram, Snap has responded by releasing an updated version of its Lens Studio desktop app. Both applications serve the same function: they make it easier for users to create and share their own AR effects.
During the Snap Partner Summer Summit 2019, the company announced the introduction of the updated Lens Studio which has lots of new templates as well as new ways to create effects. There are new additions to the Landmarkers Lens that enable creators to build Lenses which transform some of the world’s iconic landmarks in real-time. The company has also announced the addition of new templates for body-tracking, hand-tracking and much more.
The Lens Studio desktop app was launched to make Snap’s AR effects more accessible so that everyone can have the chance to create their own augmented reality filters.
To make it even more accessible, Snap is introducing a new interactive tour which will break down the process step by step. Snap’s wants to make it possible for even novice creators to create their own augmented reality filters right from the start. Snap is also rolling out new start screen elements that will help highlight the new features. This will include six new Lens Templates along with 14 new Landmarker locations that will now be part of the Lens Studio offerings.
There is the Portrait Particles template that lets creators decorate the space behind a user’s head using customized particles. The Face in Video will track faces and there is Countdown for making Lenses which count own to specific dates and subsequently adds the celebratory 3D accessories onto the user’s face that’s similar to glasses when it arrives. Skeletal leads creators to Lenses which track 2D images onto necks, heads, joints and hands. The Hair Color template lets creators create Lenses that can modify a person’s hair color and style. Then there is the Make-up template that lets users create Lenses which add augmented reality make-up to users’ faces.
Here is a quick summary of the Lenses:-
- Face in Video: To track faces onto a video.
- Portrait Particles: Spice things up using customized particles which will segment behind the user’s heads. It enables you to decorate using footers, post-effects and headers.
- Makeup: Apply makeup on your face using augmented reality eyeshadow, blush, lip gloss and much more.
- Skeletal: Track 2D images onto hands, necks, elbows, shoulders and joints.
- Countdown: Make Lenses which count down to specific dates and then adds celebratory glasses and hats.
- Landmarkers: Experiment with lots of new locations in Landmarkers Lens.
Snap has brought 14 more Landmarkers to life. The Landmarkers feature launched only a few months ago with a few locations such as the Buckingham Palace and Eiffel Tower. Now it expands the palette of locations to include Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, Prague’s Astronomical Clock, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, Istanbul’s Galata Tower, Munich’s Neues Rathaus, the Statue of Liberty, Mumbai’s Gateway of India, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, London’s Museum of Natural History, Saudi Arabia’s Qasr Al-Farid, London’s Tower Bridge, El Castillo in Mexico and the Taj Mahal in India.
