It has been known for sometime that PlayStation 5 will be launching this year. The reveal will be in early 2020 and the launch is expected to occur in November of this year. The virtual reality publisher Immersive VR Education is claiming that Sony is planning to launch PSVR 2 when PS 5 arrives. The claim is so far unverified but Sony has previously talked about building software for the next version of PSVR.

VRFocus is reporting that Immersive VR Education had recently shared “trading update” for the end of 2019. Apart from outlining its projections for the year 2020, the publisher has also referenced the updated version of PSVR. The brief mention says that 2020 will see Sony release both PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation VR 2 headset. The release of PSVR 2 is set to increase the high-end virtual reality user-base. Sony is planning to support the virtual reality device using its present suite of showcase software.

These claims don’t align with statements from Sony executives. Sony’s Head of R&D for PlayStation Dominic Mallinson has said that it would be a “mistake” to launch both devices at the same time as the company does not want to “bombard” consumers with lots of new hardware. He explained that consumers needed a little “breathing space” between the product launches.

It is known that Sony is working on a follow-up to its PSVR headset. Patents for PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR 2) were all over the web a few months ago. The patents don’t necessarily confirm what the headset might finally entail but they offer a hint on how Sony will go about improving the technology in the PSVR headset.

Sony’s PlayStation VR has probably been the most successful in the market currently and has shipped more than 5 million units worldwide to date. Its success has been largely due to bundling packages with PS4. The headset has some good momentum which will justify Sony’s continued support and investment in VR.

The PSVR run will face serious challenge from PC VR games which are currently hitting a point where they are surpassing the capabilities of PS4. In the short-term future, Sony is going to overcome the PC VR challenge with games such as Asgard’s Wrath, Stormlands and many more.
