This week saw Ultraleap sign an agreement with Pimax that will offer the latter hand tracking for its entire Virtual Reality headset range.

Ultraleap’s hand tracking technology is already being used in enterprise VR headsets such as the VRgineer’s XTAL and the Varjo VR-2 Pro but consumers still had to rely on the Leap Motion controller. With the new collaboration between the two companies, Pimax will now be able to use the new hand tracking module in all of its product range. The new module seamlessly connects to the underside of the Pimax headset. It will, thus, be compatible with Pimax’s entire range including its latest 8K X and 8K Plus headsets. It will also be compatible with the entry-level Pimax Artisan headset.

The new module has Ultraleap’s latest hand tracking technology. Its specifications include its stereoscopic IR camera which creates an interaction zone that has a range of up to 100cm (40”) and which extends from the device in a 160 by 160-degree field-of-view (FOV). The solution will be a seamless plug and play that works in combination with the Ultraleap hand tracking software platform.

The new module is Ultraleap’s first official accessory integration for a consumer Virtual Reality headset. It should enable even more users to experience more interactive interactions along with immersive Virtual Reality experiences with their preferred games.

In a statement, Pimax COO Kevin Henderson stated that the company is working on the final production arrangements and that they expect these modules to be available to the Pimax community in the second quarter of 2020. He continued,

“As the most advanced hand tracking available, we can’t wait to see our supporters play around with this addition and finally have the power of natural interaction for all of their VR experiences.

The Ultraleap hand tracking module costs $169.95 and is scheduled for release in the next few months. Users can sign up for notifications on the tracking module’s availability on the Pimax website.

Late last year, Pimax unveiled its line of 8K resolution VR headsets and these were showcased this year during the CES 2020.

Pimax provides a range of super-high resolution and large field of view (170-degree) headsets for the consumer market, mostly for gaming applications. Its latest line of VR headsets, the Vision Series headsets, are the first native resolution 8K Virtual Reality headsets and offer users an industry-leading degree of immersion.

Pimax has been developing headsets for quite some time now with models such as the Pimax 5K+, the XR (OLED) as well as the Pimax 8K headsets. All of these headsets can be used seamlessly with Ultraleap’s hand tracking accessory.

Ultraleap has developed its hand-tracking module over a 10-year period through Artificial Intelligence. The technology can be used across a section of industries including digital signage, automotive, consumer electronics, industrial automation as well as in location-based entertainment to offer a natural interaction between people and technology.
