Resolution Games: There are Around 5 Million VR Gamers Worldwide
XR game studio Resolution Games estimates that there are about five million active virtual reality players worldwide. It isn’t clear what the studio means by “active” but it is assumed this defines the number of users who use their VR headsets at least once a month.
Resolution Games has been developing virtual reality games since 2016 and now estimates that the VR gaming market currently consists of 5 million active users.
The immersive industry is still an obscure one with data on the VR headset sales hard to come by. It is even harder to unearth data on the actual active users. Last week, Resolution Games announced that there are about 5 million active players. This figure is important as the studio has been developing VR games for more than five years across disparate platforms and is in a great position to offer insights into the size of the VR gaming market.
Stockholm-based Resolution Games has developed a solid reputation in the industry thanks to its top quality and innovative VR game ideas as seen in the cooperative cooking game Cook-Out, the competitive duel shooter Blaston, and the tabletop RPG Demeo.
In total, Resolution Games has launched ten games. The studio has also attracted top investors such as Qualcomm which has invested $38.5 million in the studio since its founding.
The studio contends that the virtual reality market still has good growth potential. Resolution Games’ VR games are available on all major platforms and the studio has released 10 VR titles over the years. This gives the Resolution Games some great insight into the development of VR user numbers, at least along its own titles or applications.
During the Augmented World Expo 2021 (AWE 2021), Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm estimated that there are about 5 million VR players active across all platforms. The studio clarified that Palm’s estimate was a “rough estimation” of the number of active VR users that the studio sees on different platforms. It was on the same platform that Palm announced that Resolution Games was creating a new AR game development division.
Resolution Games didn’t define what it means by “active” users. Usually, the term is used to refer to the users who use a VR device at least once every month. Palm stated that the current number of active VR users is enough to support successful virtual reality multiplayer games, something that wasn’t possible back in 2016.
Most Active VR Users Should Be on Quest 2
Meta’s Quest platform is likely to have the lion’s share of the number of active VR users thanks to the roaring success of its two Quest headsets. Monthly SteamVR statistics show that Meta’s Quest platform is currently the most popular PC VR headset although Meta mainly markets the device as a standalone VR device. Additionally, both Quest 1 and Quest 2 headsets are also ahead in terms of sales thanks to their affordability and availability. The two are virtual reality headsets that are likely to be used on a regular basis.
The 5 million active user estimate is only for the fully-featured virtual reality headsets such as Quest, PSVR, and PC VR. It does not cover the older and more limited VR headsets such as the Google Cardboard and Oculus Go.
