Meta Portal Now Supports Microsoft Teams
Meta is improving on the use of Facebook Assistant on its smart displays. What other features does the Meta Portal update bring?
Facebook underwent a rebrand which was made official during the Metaverse Connect 2021 in October. The name change not only affected the company’s VR department, Oculus, but also its smart displays which are now known as Meta Portal, Meta Portal Go as well as Meta Portal Plus. Following a software update, Meta is now giving its devices that specialize in video telephony some new features.
New Features for the Facebook Assistant
Following the update, Meta Portal device users can take selfies on command via the built-in smart camera. Using the voice command “Hey, portal take a photo”, the voice AI Facebook Assistant captures the moment and loads the picture directly into the library.
In case you want, the Facebook Assistant can now also display profiles or posts from your Facebook friends. It can also play Facebook stories with voice commands such as “Hey portal, show me stories”, “Hey portal, show me latest post from XY on Facebook” or “Hey portal, show me the latest photo from XY”.
New AR Features for Meta Portal
Anyone communicating via messenger on Meta Portal can use the new AR effects in the future. If a user desires, these can now be transmitted simultaneously to both parties. Additionally, three new AR games are being added to the Photo Booth of the Meta Portal devices and all of these are controlled with the Facebook Assistant. There is Quizbee which tests the trivia knowledge of its users, sequencer trains your number memory while Port-a-Pet conjures up a virtual pet on the screen that a user can interact with using voice commands.
Meta Portal Now has Alexa Smart Home Dashboard
Meta’s smart display has been primarily designed for video telephony applications. It has built-in Alexa features, built-in WLAN, and Bluetooth interfaces that can be used as a control center for your smart home. However, there hasn’t been a clear dashboard so far.
The latest Meta portal update adds the Alexa Touch Interface to portal users. All the smart home devices and the Alexa functions have been clearly displayed there and can be activated through touch. This update could make Meta’s smart displays a real alternative to Amazon’s smart display Echo Show 8, at least in the smart home control functions.
Meta Portal to Support Microsoft Teams in the Future
With the Bluetooth support in the keyboard and the headphones, you can now use Portal devices for business conferencing. On top of Facebook Messenger, Meta’s Smart Displays have also provided support for the conferencing apps Zoom, GoToMeeting, Webex, BlueJeans, and Workplace.
The Meta Portal devices from the second generation onwards have been able to access Microsoft Teams from December 8th.
