Although often derided as a worthless fad, NFTs are the hottest crypto craze right now and are attracting a lot of the FOMOing money into the metaverse and crypto world. Top crypto investors and even artists are pouring tens of thousands of dollars and even hundreds of thousands of dollars buying up what, at face value, appear to be ugly monkey cartoons. Even serious tech players are getting into NFTs including Twitter, Meta, and VIVE which plans to launch an NFT marketplace called VIVE Bytes in mid-February.

VIVE Bytes will form part of Viveport, Vive’s hardware-agnostic store for VR apps and games. The company’s NFT marketplace will be focusing on cartoons, anime, and game-themed NFTs at the beginning. The first wave of NFTs to be listed on the marketplace will be from Shu Yamamoto’s Step Into Cat Art Exhibition.

In September 2021, Viveport held an online exhibition of Step Into Cat Art showcasing 124 versions of Yamamoto’s work. Soon, interested users will be able to own some of the artist’s work as NFTs. All of The Hisstine Chaple ceiling painting will be listed on the Vive NFT marketplace through a number of “Collect-to-Unlock” NFT Mystery Box special events. Those who buy the Cat Art NFTs also get the chance to purchase limited-edition 3D Cat Art model NFTs such as the one shown above.

The VIVE Byte Marketplace will support both cryptocurrency and fiat payments when it launches next month. It will also be possible to link MetaMask wallets to the user accounts.  The Vive NFT marketplace is also planning to incorporate auction functions in the future.

Vive has previously ventured into nonfungible tokens. In December last year, it sold a collection of Art Nouveau NFT masterpieces from the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha through Vive Arts Marketplace.

Vive Byte is set to launch in mid-February and will feature a collection of exclusive NFTs in the inaugural sales event.
