The analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC) is estimating that Meta’s Quest 2 headset has sold an estimated 14.8 million units since its launch.

The IDC is a data analysis and research firm that produces comprehensive reports covering estimates of market size, market share as well as unit sales for popular products. The IDC generally uses sources derived from the supply chain but there can be variations in accuracy, particularly for the low volume products.

In a Twitter post. Francisco Jeronimo from IDC wrote that nearly 15 million Meta Quest 2 products have been sold over the 20 months that they have been in the market making it “the most successful VR headset to date.” Jeronimo says virtual reality sales grew 97% in 2021 and 242% in the first quarter of 2022.

The Meta Quest 2 performance is quite impressive considering Sony’s PlayStation 5 has officially sold 20 million units while the Xbox Series X and S are both estimated to have sold just over 14 million units. Should IDC’s analysis prove accurate, then Meta Quest 2 has so far sold more units than the two new Xbox consoles combined.

It may not be easy to confirm the accuracy of these stats since Meta rarely publishes sales figures for its hardware. However, there are plenty of clues pointing to the fact that Meta’s Quest 2 headset has done really well.

For instance, in March 2021, Meta’s current CTO Andrew Bosworth stated that the Quest 2 headset had “outsold not just its predecessor, but all its predecessors combined.”  There was also a product recall in July 2021 which showed that some 4 million Quest 2 interfaces had been sold in the US alone and these sales covered those sold separately as well as those included with the headset.

Most revealingly, Qualcomm CEO stated in November last year Quest 2 had shipped 10 million units. This was a significant statement as Qualcomm manufactures the Snapdragon XR2 chip that powers the Quest 2 headset.  However, a Qualcomm spokesperson later walked back the statement describing it as “an average of third-party market size estimates” but this was seen as more of a damage control given the company’s close technological and manufacturing relationship with Quest 2 and Meta.

The Qualcomm statement citing 10 million Meta Quest 2 units was made in November 2021, just 13 months after the headset hit the market. If that figure was accurate, then it is reasonable that the Quest 2 headset has now sold 14.8 million units after 20 months in the market.

It is noteworthy that these analyst reports may not always be accurate and Meta (then Facebook) has in the past poured scorn on some of the past analyst reports. Referring to a SuperData report, Oculus founder once described the firm’s estimates of VR sales data as “terrible”.
