Lenovo is putting the augmented reality in Marvel.

The company’s first augmented reality headset had some handicap. It only played games and at the time of its launch, there was just a single game to play with it, the Star Wars: Jedi Challenges. This was an attractive franchise but it was still unrealistic to expect people to fork out $200 for an ARKit just to play a single game. From now on, there will be more than just the Star Wars: Jedi Challenges in your Mirage AR. Lenovo is continuing with its partnership with Disney and releasing a new Marvel Avenger game Dimension of Heroes. It is also releasing a new set of controllers.

The kit will be unlike the first iteration of the Lenovo Mirage headset that were shipped with the lightsaber controllers. The new Marvel Dimension of Heroes kit includes a pair of new generic-grip controllers known as Universe Controllers which are usable not only for the Dimension of Heroes but also for powering a variety of other games. They have been designed with LEDs at the top part which flash in different colors during the play. They have semi-circular handles with little joysticks at the top part. The user has to place AA batteries in each of these which will give them upto 8 hours of gameplay. The controllers are based on the typical core technology where the sticks are tracked by two cameras built into the headset. The notable improvement with the Universe Controllers is that now they are tracked in real-time.

The new controllers are the only the new addition. Everything else about the original Lenovo Mirage headset has stayed the same. This provides for easy backward compatibility so if you have the old set, you only need to purchase new accessories and you will be good to go in using the same headset and beacon when playing the new Marvel game.

Dimension of Heroes lets you play Captain Marvel, Dr. Strange, Thor, Black Panther or Star-Lord where you will embark on a mission to travel back in time and save the world from Dormamu. If you have been a huge Star Wars fan, you are going to love this role!

Dimension of Heroes has very simple mechanics. You will utilize the weapons such as Captain Marvel’s blasters and the Star Lord’s Element Guns in destroying the aliens that have been sent by Dormamu. You can subsequently proceed through five timelines and then morph yourself into Dr. Strange in order to battle the dark being itself.

The controllers have been designed for dual-hand combat so you can use the other hand for melee fighting when taking on characters such as Thor that are known for using single-handed weapons such as Mjolnir.

Players also have to calibrate the new controllers using beacons in order to achieve accuracy. This accuracy will enable you to aim and kill the monsters coming at you with greater precision in the augmented reality world. If you are an avid Marvel fan, you will love playing as your favorite characters while listening to the various lines from the Marvel’s comic writers.

Dimension of Heroes also has a local co-op mode just like in the original Star Wars game enabling you to enjoy the game with a friend. You can also pair up with Star Lord or Thor and create your Asgardians of the Galaxy adventure. There is also a real-time leaderboard competition in the game where you can take on other strangers from across the globe.

The new Lenovo Mirage AR kit goes for $240 and will be available from today as an Amazon exclusive. The kit can also be ordered from Lenovo.com. If you only wish to order the new Universe controllers, then it is possible to purchase them separately. The target price hasn’t been confirmed yet but it is most likely going to be under $100.

Still, the kit offers players only two games now which is not a good lineup of titles. But the addition of the new content bodes well for Lenovo Mirage AR as Disney still has a massive catalog of highly popular franchises. Lenovo may end up building AR games for each of those popular and widely loved Disney franchises to appeal to a broader user base.

The transition towards more universal controllers along with the new branding of the headset as “Mirage AR” could be a pointer that Lenovo and Disney may be working on adding new franchises to the device.

The details of Lenovo’s partnership with Disney first came out in April of this year. The new Lenovo Mirage AR headset will once again rely on users’ phones. Users can download an app for free which will enable them to overlay the images into their real-world view thereby allowing them to bring their Star Wars heroes into their spaces.
