Meta has now unlocked various new native video recording settings for the Quest 2 headset including a 16:9 aspect ratio and 4K resolution. However, these recording features are only available to developers.

Users on Meta Quest will finally be able to record their virtual reality videos in landscape mode and using different quality settings.

One of the complaints Meta Quest 2 users have complained about since the headset’s launch is a dearth of sufficient options for recording virtual reality games on the Meta Quest 2. For instance, they have had to do with the rectangular image format and this is only practical for upright videos for YouTube Shorts and TikTok videos.

Meta Quest Aspect Ratio

To record videos in a landscape format on the Quest 2 headset, users have had to rely on unofficial apps such as SideQuest. Now developers on Quest 2 will have additional settings for video recording.

There is a new Oculus Developer Hub update. This update can only be downloaded by users with an Oculus Developer account. It is this update that provides developers with several recording options.

While the default 1:1, 1024p at 36fps setting is still available, developers now have other options including 1080p, 1440p and 2160 resolutions. Each of the resolutions can be recorded at 36fps or 60fps settings.

The new update also comes with options for changing the bitrate of the video from its default 5MBps to a maximum of 40MBps. There is also the option to make the view either monoscopic or stereoscopic which will allow for more immersive virtual reality game trailers.

Players with a developer account can now increase the bitrate for better compression. This is useful as it helps avoid washed-out images with artifacts. The scale has now moved from 5MBps to 40MBps and users can now also record a stereoscopic video.

Quest 2 developers and content creators have been asking for these native recording settings for quite some time now. The 1:1 video recordings in Quest 2 may be ideal for Facebook and Instagram but not necessarily for other platforms.

The Meta Quest 2 headset is set to record and display a 1:1 aspect ratio by default, with a 1024 resolution. To transform this square into a 16:9 aspect ratio, a creator must either add thick black rectangles on both sides of the image or simply trim it down which can likely cut out some of the important pixels.

Creators and devs could use external tools to capture videos in VR in the desired format but setting these up can be a cumbersome process.

With native resolution, devs and creators can now seamlessly record high-resolution 16:9 VR footage.

The 16:9 aspect ratio is one that the human eye is used to on our regular displays. It is the aspect ratio on your TV and PC monitors. In fact, most trailers for new virtual reality games on YouTube are rendered in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Unlocking this aspect ratio will allow creators and devs to record more visually appealing trailers which can get other players excited about titles shared online.

The new native video settings will also come in handy for Twitch and YouTube content creators who wish to share their gameplay videos online. For now, these features are only available for developers and we are crossing our fingers to see if they will eventually be available for regular players. Meta has acknowledged in the past that many Quest headset owners are demanding broader video settings so it is possible it might roll out these features to mainstream players and users.

Recording Affects the Performance of VR Games

While many players would love to record and share their VR experiences, it is important to keep in mind that recording affects the performance of virtual reality games, particularly in light of the Quest headset’s limited power. When recording, games can run into some problems when running in 4K because the current headsets simply don’t have the computing power to handle higher resolutions. Maybe Meta’s upcoming high-end Project Cambria headset will provide more oomph to allow quality recording while playing a VR game.
