The game developer Stress Level Zero has launched its VR game Bonelab as an experimental physics action game. This is the latest in the studio’s experimental physics series.

Stress Level Zero is best known for Boneworks, a narrative virtual reality action-adventure that uses advanced physics mechanics. Like its predecessor, Bonelab offers physics-first simulated gameplay and interaction.

One of the features of Bonelab is that it can be modded. The title is launching on Meta Quest 2 and other PC VR headsets.

Bonelab says the first part of the game gives players a swift run-through of basics and combat before they enter the main lab environment where they will get more options.

From the main lab, players can work with different levels that they can play in and explore. Once a player has played at least three levels, they can solve a crane puzzle and then work out a pathway to the third part of the Bonelab.

It will take some time before the final sequence of levels arrives and it will come with various newer concepts. After this, players will keep returning to a physics sandbox that offers a large variety of unlockable objects.

Bonelab has a layered narrative similar to what was in the Boneworks. Stress Level Zero also created the VR title Hover Junkers in 2016 so it is already well-versed with early VR fans.

Boneworks was first released in 2019 and was picked as Steam’s Best of VR Platinum in the same year. It has earned that title every year since.

Bonelab highlights Stress Level Zero’s Marrow1 VR physics foundation’s continued evolution which the developer first developed for Boneworks. Bonelab expands on and polishes the mechanics and has pushed it further into the realms of simulation by providing a seamless transition between the vehicles, and avatars as well as enhanced physics tuning, according to the company.

It rotates around the concept that the player explores a mysterious lab that is filled with enemies, weapons, challenges, and secrets. The player has to escape their reality and evade a death sentence because they are an outcast. There is also the option of exploring user-generated levels.

The player must discover a pathway to a hidden underground research facility located beneath the depths of MythOS city.

Players in the game also find various challenging experiments and discoveries all through the adventure. Players can deploy various ranged, melee, and exotic physics weapons to engage their enemies and solve their puzzles using a whole armory. The game also features custom avatar importing that allows for further gameplay experimentation through matching physical stat modifications.

The VR market is currently witnessing a surge in the sales of next-generation virtual reality gaming devices which are now beginning to sell at scale. In 2021 alone, Oculus sold more virtual reality headsets than Microsoft did Xboxs.

Market research firm IDC reports that year-over-year sales of virtual reality devices rose more than 92% in 2021 with annual shipments projected to hit 50 million units by 2026. Rising inflation and parts shortages may dim some of these projections. The recent Meta Quest headset’s $100 price hike may also slow down sales a bit.
