Mark Zuckerberg has released a video of himself teasing the color passthrough of the Meta Quest Pro headset with the gameplay of a mixed reality fencing game.

The video showcases the new color passthrough feature of the upcoming Meta Quest Pro headset. Zuckerberg first teased the headset’s flagship passthrough of the headset in May using another mixed reality demo. Both videos of the demo were shared on Facebook and Instagram, platforms that use heavy compression on uploaded content and make it difficult to gauge the actual image quality.

Also, it is noteworthy that Meta is still calling the Meta Quest Pro headset as Project Cambria, the codename that was first revealed at the Connect 2021 and which is used internally by Meta’s engineering and development teams. In a recent interview, Zuckerberg used the ‘Quest Pro’ name. The Quest Pro name is also used in a Quest iOS app. The name was also confirmed by the recent headset discovery of an engineering sample by a hotel worker who bumped on the headset with the packaging labeled Quest Pro.

In an investor call, Zuckerberg said that the product would focus on work use cases. A leaked internal memo has also described the headset as a “prosumer/industrial-grade mixed reality” device. The headset is also compatible with the existing Quest content.

The Quest Pro uses higher resolution color cameras and depth sensor that results in more practical mixed reality experiences. This is in contrast to the low-resolution black and white passthrough in the Quest 2 headset.

The Quest Pro headset has a more balanced design that the previous Quest headset, the Quest 2. The Quest Pro also has a slimmer visor which has been made possible by the pancake lenses rather than the Fresnel lenses used in the previous Quest 2 headset.

ByteDance’s Pico 4 series also use pancake lenses. Pancake lenses also support smaller panels that have a shorter gap to the lenses resulting in slimmer and lighter visors.

Meta also states that the Quest Pro headset features built-in eye tracking and face tracking for driving avatars in social experiences.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed in April that the Quest Pro has dual 2160 x 2160 mini-LED panels, an improvement over Quest 2’s 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye and regular LCD panels.

Information on import logs suggests the headset has 12GB RAM, which would be double Quest 2’s 6GB.

The Quest Pro will be officially announced at the Meta Connect 2022 which takes place on October 11. Meta has said the headset will cost “significantly” more than $800 although XR hardware analyst, citing sources, says the headset will cost $1,500. The Quest Pro headset will not replace the Meta Quest 2 and will be sold alongside it.
