Originally kept under wraps, details are beginning to stream in about Meta’s upcoming headset, the Meta Quest 3, with new features beginning to appear in the Meta Quest companion app.

Youtuber and XR hardware analyst Bradley Lynch (SadlyItsBradley) shared a screenshot of the Meta Quest app on Twitter showing device selection on the menu.

This selection now shows Quest, Quest 2, Quest Pro, and a headset listed as “Eureka”, the codename that originally appeared in the Quest firmware and is believed to be representing the next Meta Quest headset.

Although news outlets and analysts already call it Meta Quest 3, Meta is yet to divulge the official name of its next consumer headset, which will be the successor to Meta Quest 2.

According to Lynch, the fact that the “Eureka” entry now appears suggests that the first developer kits of the headset are already being sent to developers. This was also the case with Meta Quest Pro where the codename of the device, “Seacliff”, first appeared in its selection menu on the Meta Quest app which was quickly followed by the launch.

Meta Quest 3 Might Feature QR Code Scanning

Firmware sleuth NyaVR has said the entry of “Eureka” in the companion app can appear if the app is updated to the new v205 software and that this does not necessarily suggest that the developer kits have been shipped.

NyaVR says the v205 update meaningfully increases the number of references to “Eureka” in the app. Meta also uses the name “New Quest” rather than “Quest 3”, perhaps a ploy to hide the official name of the headset before its official unveiling. Previously, one could see the phrase “Welcome to your Quest 3”.

NyaVR also spotted new references to QR code scanning. The Meta Quest 3 headset could include functionality that enables automatic pairing of the Quest 3 headset with the Quest companion app along with home Wi-Fi via a QR code scan on the smartphone. This would mean a seamless initial device setup.

Two New Quest Headsets to be Launched by 2024

Firmware sleuth NyaVR also discovered a string of code that hints at an eye-relief adjustment mechanism for the Meta Quest 3 headset.

The code says a user will be able to adjust their lens depth when they press the buttons inside and pull the headset backward and forward. If this proves accurate, it would make Meta Quest 3 its first commercial headset with this functionality.

It is now confirmed that the next generation Meta Quest will be launching later in the year, likely in the fall. A leaked presentation of Meta roadmap, reported by The Verge, stated that the headset will cost more than $400 so Meta Quest 2 headset is likely to stay in place until 2024 when Meta will launch a cheaper consumer headset codenamed “Ventura”.

Although leaked renderings of the Quest 3 headset have been circulating for a while, it still isn’t clear what the final headset will actually look like. Click here for more information on the Meta Quest 3 headset.
