Islanders VR Edition is getting a mixed-reality update. Now you will be able to build cities right from the comfort of your home on a Quest headset.

Islanders VR Edition was released in early 2023 and was billed as a “minimalist strategy game about building cities on beautiful islands.”

Thanks to a new passthrough update, the immersive virtual reality game is now converted into a mixed reality game, joining a growing lineup of other mixed reality games already available on the Quest 3 headset. The new pass-through update will enable you to build islands across the headset’s home environment. Check out the demonstration below: –

According to developers at Coatsink studio John Peart and Richard Ashby, the mixed reality update was developed over a three-month period. The two programmers explained that the mixed reality passthrough update was something that they had been contemplating “since the start.” Ashby compared playing the game in mixed reality as bringing out “the same type of feeling as building a model world out of LEGO bricks.”

Islanders was first released in 2019 on flatscreen platforms. Unlike other popular city builders, Islanders does not impose a cost on the city-building process. Its model entails giving players an inventory with limited buildings to place on the island. Players earn points according to the placements. When they build a sufficient score, they can progress to the next procedurally generated island.

You can find Islanders VR on Meta Quest and Steam Platforms. However, the mixed reality (passthrough) update is only available on Quest.
