Documents show a new Meta headset just got an FCC certification, usually a prelude to the launch. This is likely the Meta Quest 3s according to analysts.

The FCC is a US regulatory agency in charge of wireless frequency use. An FCC certification is required from the agency to sell electronic devices with wireless technology to ensure compliance with the requisite standards in the US market. Products with wireless capabilities must get FCC approval before they enter the US market. Whenever FCC documents show that a product has recently received an approval, it is usually a sign that the product is likely to launch soon. This was the case with many previous headset launches in the US market, including Meta Quest 3 among others.

FCC Filing for Meta Quest 3S

The FCC filing for the Meta device was first spotted by the website 91 mobiles. In the filing, the product has been identified as 2AGOZ-P97. A search on the FCC website brings up several FCC documents for the product with this code. The documents were uploaded on September 1, or probably earlier.

There is no mention of the product name anywhere in the filings. However, the device is most likely the Meta Quest 3S. Meta might probably call it by another name but it is the same lite version of Quest expected to launch soon. The documents show the headset will support Wi-Fi 6E, just like the higher-end Quest 3 headset. That means the headset will have a 6GHz band.

The higher frequency means better bandwidth and thus little interference from other gadgets. However, at that frequency, the signal will degrade more as it passes through solid objects such as walls and it won’t travel far. These features make it ideal for wireless PC streaming via a router or access point that is located in the same room as the headset.

Several sources have intimated that the Quest 3S headset is a Lite, a more affordable version of the higher-end Quest 3 headset. It still has Quest 3’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset as well as color passthrough functionality for mixed reality capabilities. However, it still relies on the old Fresnel lenses used in Quest 1 and 2. It is these that have brought the price down to between $300 and $400.

A Quest 3s seemingly appeared in the background of a video that Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth shared two months ago and he even hinted it was indeed the headset. The first clear picture of the Quest 3S headset appeared in July when it was shared on X by a virtual reality headset manufacturer in China.
