Buy Vive Cosmos Elite for $899 and Get a Free Half-Life: Alyx Copy
With Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx launch less than 48 hours away, one of the decisions that you may have to quickly make is picking the right platform on which you will play the game. The best virtual reality headset for the game is undoubtedly the Valve Index headset which is currently sold out and won’t be back in stock in a very long time.
Fortunately, there are a number of SteamVR-compatible alternatives that you can go for such as the Rift S (now sold out), Oculus Quest (sold out), Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or the Windows Mixed Reality headset.
One of these is the newly arrived virtual reality headset Vive Cosmos Elite.
This week, HTC released a Vive Cosmos Elite bundle that includes a free Half-Life: Alyx.
The launch could never have come at a more fortuitous time. The Valve Index, Rift S and Oculus Quest headsets are already sold out. The Vive Cosmos Elite headset was released last month together with other headsets in the Cosmos lineup. The Elite headset version also supports SteamVR’s lighthouse base station tracking solution.
The full Vive Cosmos Elite kit now costs $899. For this price, you get the headset, a pre-installed External Tracking Faceplate, two Vive controllers as well as two SteamVR base stations.
Additionally, customers that purchase the Cosmos will also get an in-box redemption code to unlock Half-Life: Alyx when the game launches on March 23. Users that already have the Vive Cosmos headset can purchase the External Tracking Faceplate during Q2 for $199. The headset can be used with the v1.0 and v2.0 base stations along with the original Vive and Vive Pro controllers.
All the Vive Cosmos headsets still have a combined resolution of 2880 x 1770 (or 1440 x 1700 per eye) with an LCD display as well as a hinged front that allows users to quickly pop in and out of VR.
Half-Life: Alyx will be the biggest VR act in 2020 so the $899 price tag might as well be worth it. Especially given the uncertainty over the replenishment of the other preferred VR headsets like Valve Index or Rift S. Lots of passionate gamers are eager to lay their hands on the game and the HTC Vive Cosmos Elite might just ride the wave as it is one of the few VR headsets that are still in stock.
The game is the first sequel since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode Two in 2007. You can experience these games for free on Steam ahead of the launch Alyx in two days’ time.
The virtual reality adds a layer of interactivity to the game with players now intimately immersed into the action. The headscrabs in Alyx are said to be so terrifyingly realistic that players have been warned to prepare themselves mentally for them. Check out this list of the other virtual reality headsets that are Alyx-compatible.
