The Original ‘Myst’ is Coming to VR on Quest
The classic adventure Myst is being adapted to virtual reality, Facebook and the creator Cyan Worlds announced a fortnight ago during the Facebook Connect. The classic will be remade for Quest later in the year and will be launching after the release of the Oculus Quest 2 headset.
The virtual reality version of Myst was described as a “reimagining” of the 1993 classic that was created with Apple’s HyperCard software. It features new art, interactions as well as audio. There is also a randomized puzzle option that adds an extra layer of challenge. A trailer was released that gives a reminder into what Myst is all about though it doesn’t show the VR remake of the game or its gameplay.
Cyan Worlds has previously launched a VR title with Obduction which is regarded as the spiritual successor to Myst and which had optional support for virtual reality. Obduction came out in 2016 just about the time when the first (and current) generation of virtual reality headsets were hitting the market. The game had some impressive design and clever puzzles but it came out a time when the creator was still trying to figure out how make a non-VR game that would work in virtual reality. In the remake of Myst, there won’t be such compromises and the creator can raw from a broader set of conventions for virtual reality games.
From the screenshots released so far, it looks like Cyan Worlds is bringing a very fine level of detail into the game.
Cyan’s VR other VR title Firmament is scheduled to launch to next year.
The studio said that Myst has been built completely from the ground up for Quest. It is likely the game will be a Quest-excusive although the studio hasn’t revealed much.
