How to Submit an App for App Lab
Facebook’s recent introduction of the App Lab platform has curtailed many of the technical requirements and Virtual Reality Checks (VRCs) that have locked out many apps and projects from the Oculus Store. The submission process for apps and other experimental content for App Lab is now fairly simple.
However, developers still have to comply with App Lab policies which include a Data Use Policy, Oculus Content Guidelines and App Policies. The apps that are submitted to App Lab must also support App Sharing as stated in Oculus’ App Lab Policies. Before you submit your app, take time to review Oculus’ App Lab VRCs.
Below is the process of submitting an app for App Lab: –
- Start by logging into the Oculus Developer Dashboard
- Click “Create new app”
- Enter the name of the app you are submitting to App Lab
- Select “Quest (App Lab)”
- Proceed and follow the steps to upload your app. You must also upload screenshots and provide the description text for the app. Then submit the app for review.
How to Market Your App Lab App
If an app has been accepted and published in App Lab, you can simply share it with your community via URL. There is no longer the need to sideload an app. This URL will directly open the app product description page and will display information about the app including the trailers, screenshots along with the option to purchase or install the app.
Another way to distribute your app is by generating Oculus Keys that are redeemable for a free copy of the app and which gives you the leeway for a more controlled app release.
SideQuest also provides a good launch pad and distribution portal for your SideQuest apps. Oculus partnered with SideQuest to facilitate distribution of App Lab apps on the sideloading platform. SideQuest has, in turn, created a URL and central page applab.games where users can find the App Lab apps. Check out the applab.games URL here.
Developers can submit an App Lab URL to SideQuest instead of sending an Android APK in order to promote their apps directly to the robust and enthusiastic SideQuest community who are already accustomed to trying out apps outside the official Oculus Store.
App Lab apps does not need a developer mode, sideloading or a PC to install so they are likely to have greater reach for the apps that deploy App Lab for distribution.
