Apple Reality Pro Headset on “Final Sprint”, Set to Launch Very Soon
There are strong signs that Apple will be announcing its much-rumored AR/VR headset, called the Apple Reality Pro, soon. Taiwan’s Economic Daily News is reporting that Apple’s supply chain is now in the “final sprint” in its preparations for mass production. The company’s supply chains are reportedly in the last stages of finalizing the techniques and assembly procedures indicating the headset will soon go on sale.
Earlier reports and rumors had indicated that the mixed reality headset will be unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) set for June 5 to 9. It now looks like this will be the case although it still isn’t clear when the headset might go on sale.
The latest reports come from GIS, a Foxconn subsidiary. GIS reportedly forms part of the supply chain and operates a factory based in China that laminates the lenses of the Apple headset. GIS also laminates the iPad displays. Once they have been laminated, the lenses are reportedly sent to another company assembling the Apple headset. According to the report, GIS estimates that Apple will begin mass production of the headset “from the second quarter” of 2023 and that this will run into the third quarter. The second quarter of this year began on April 1 until the end of June.
A WWDC Unveiling is Highly Probable
The latest report from the Taiwanese news outlet coincides with recent reports that suggested the headset would be unveiled at the WWDC 2023 in June and the launch will come at a later date.
It is likely the first units of the Apple Reality Pro headset will be shipped to developers. With the second quarter running until the end of June, we are likely to see the headset hit the market a few weeks after the WWDC conference. This would give developers a very short window with which to familiarize themselves with the headset. The headset is also rumored to face myriad problems and the launch window is too short for Apple to rectify some of those problems.
There are recent reports to the effect that the Apple AR/VR headset will launch with various apps and that it will have an external battery pack for better comfort.
The Apple mixed reality headset reportedly costs at least $3,000 so the user community expects it to be a compelling device. Late last year, Meta released a mixed-reality headset with color passthrough that goes for $1,500. Sales flopped at that price tag forcing Meta to slash its price by at a third a few months down the line.
