Black and green Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition bundle with Xbox controller, launched at $399.99

Meta and Microsoft are putting a familiar gaming identity on a VR headset. The companies announced the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition on June 24, a limited-edition $399.99 bundle that combines a custom black-and-green Quest 3S with an Xbox Wireless Controller and subscriptions intended to make cloud gaming easy to start.

The package includes a 128GB Quest 3S, matching Touch Plus controllers, an Xbox-branded wireless controller, a Meta Quest Elite Strap, three months of Meta Horizon+ and three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Despite the Xbox design, the headset is not a new Xbox console. It is still a Quest 3S, capable of ordinary VR and mixed reality applications, with an emphasis on playing compatible Xbox cloud games on a large virtual screen.

Why an Xbox-branded Quest exists

Microsoft has been expanding Xbox beyond the traditional console model, treating access to games and services as something that can span different devices. A headset makes an unusual but understandable display option: it can present the equivalent of a large television without requiring a physical screen of that size.

The Xbox app has already been available on Quest, so the edition does not introduce an entirely new type of software compatibility. Instead, it packages the experience with matching hardware, a controller and the service subscriptions many users would need to try it.

That approach reduces setup uncertainty for people who want cloud gaming but are unfamiliar with VR hardware. The controller is pre-paired, and the hardware uses Xbox’s recognizable colors rather than Quest’s usual finish.

For Meta, the collaboration offers another reason to wear a headset that is not dependent on dedicated VR games. Watching a film, using productivity tools or playing a conventional game on a virtual display can all broaden how often a device is used.

What’s actually included

The custom headset uses the familiar Quest 3S platform, with its standalone processing, tracked Touch Plus controllers and mixed reality capabilities. The limited edition changes the product’s presentation and bundle rather than replacing Quest’s operating system with Xbox software.

The Xbox Wireless Controller is designed for games that use conventional gamepad inputs. The Touch Plus controllers remain necessary for many VR experiences, which depend on the tracked motion and buttons of the Quest controllers.

The Elite Strap is another practical inclusion. Comfort is highly personal, and a different strap can help distribute pressure for longer sessions. It does not change the screen specifications, but it may affect whether users enjoy extended viewing or gaming.

Three months of each subscription provide a trial period, not perpetual access. Buyers should consider the regular ongoing cost if they intend to keep using those services after the included time ends.

Cloud gaming inside a headset

Xbox Cloud Gaming streams a game from remote computing infrastructure rather than rendering it entirely on the headset. In Quest, the user can view that game on a virtual screen while interacting through a gamepad.

That is quite different from native VR. A cloud-streamed conventional game does not automatically gain motion-controlled hands, stereoscopic environments or full head-tracked interaction. The benefit is an adjustable, private-feeling display environment rather than transformation of the game into a VR title.

Streaming also introduces dependencies that local games do not have. Internet speed, network latency, service availability and subscription entitlements all affect the experience. A reliable connection is especially important for games requiring quick responses.

Consumers who already own a compatible Quest and controller may be able to access similar cloud-gaming functionality without buying the special edition. The product’s value is therefore partly convenience and collectible presentation.

A deliberately limited release

Microsoft says quantities are extremely limited, with the bundle offered through selected retail channels in the United States and United Kingdom as well as Meta’s own store.

The limited run may attract Xbox enthusiasts who appreciate distinctive hardware, but buyers should not interpret scarcity as a new technical capability. The edition is still based on existing Quest 3S hardware, and its availability will depend on stock.

From a business perspective, such collaborations are useful experiments. They can reveal whether a recognizable gaming brand helps bring headset hardware to audiences who would not normally shop for VR.

What it says about the future of headsets

The Xbox Edition highlights an emerging distinction between VR as a type of game and headsets as general-purpose screens and computing devices. Quest can host immersive worlds, but it can also serve as a display for content that was never designed to be immersive.

That second use case may be easier for some consumers to understand because it builds on familiar habits. A person does not need to learn motion-based combat to appreciate watching a game on a large virtual display.

The challenge remains comfort. Wearing a headset to play an ordinary game is convenient only if the advantages outweigh the weight, battery and isolation of the device.

At $399.99, the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition offers a ready-made way to explore that proposition. It is not Xbox entering VR with a dedicated console. It is Microsoft and Meta asking whether the next Xbox screen could sometimes be a headset.
