LucidCam Hopes To Become The Go-To Consumer VR Camera
Many of the virtual reality cameras out there are specifically made for the high-end, discerning eyes of the production field. But for the everyday consumer, how is VR going to make a hit? An Indiegogo campaign for a compact and light-on-the-pocket VR camera aims to create the exact device to shoot everyday moments in virtual reality.
LucidCam is a virtual reality camera for the mainstream consumer. Similar to point-and-shoot cameras, LucidCam keeps simplicity of use in mind. Thanks to this gadget, ordinary people can shoot homemade VR footage in 180-degree Full HD, stereoscopic 3D video. To further simplify the process, LucidCam comes with a set of sharing options for the user to publish VR videos that can be viewed using an ordinary VR headset such as the Google Cardboard.
Simplicity of use and affordability are some of the key strengths of LucidCam, which also make it unique from other VR cameras. It’s the point-and-shoot of VR cameras: you simply shoot, publish, and share your creation to others. The camera itself weighs eight ounces and features two camera modules which are purposely built to project footage for each eye, each with 1080p and 2K resolution. It sports 16GB of internal storage, which translates to approximately 320 minutes (on average) of virtual reality video and runs on a rechargeable battery that lasts approximately one hour of non-stop VR capturing.
For ease of sharing, the final version of LucidCam will feature both an SD card for storage, and the ability to upload videos to the user’s smartphone via Wi-Fi.
According to Han Jin, CEO of LucidCam, the VR camera only captures 180-degree VR footage instead of having a full 360-degree capability because of two main reasons: first, 180-degree footages can take up lesser storage space, which translates to extended memory use; and second, to keep the pocketability and simplicity of use of the camera.
LucidCam’s crowdfunding has about less than a month left to reach any stretch goals before production begins. Early-bird supporters could expect the device being shipped starting December next year.
