The 17th Annual imagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival announces the final round of events for the 2016 edition, running from October 19th to October 23rd in Toronto, Ontario. This Film and Media Arts Festival is the world’s largest Indigenous festival and features 96 film and video works that represent 72 Indigenous nations from all over the world.
Indigenous VR Experiences and Videogames
The 17th Annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival includes the opening of the Digital Media Art+Cade, an immersive digital media playground featuring the latest in Indigenous VR experiences and video games.
Exploring the impact of virtual reality, the Indigenous VR Spotlight is a panel featuring producers and filmmakers Nyla Innuksuk, Lanita Ririnui-Ryan, Tracy Rector and Lisa Jackson discussing how VR is currently shaping Indigenous storytelling.
Following the panel, Indigenous game developers will present their playable games housed in retro-styled arcade consoles at the Digital Media Artist Showcase. Interview opportunities with filmmaker Lisa Jackson, game designer Meagan Byrne and other Indigenous VR filmmakers and video game developers are available.

The festival focuses on new and innovative film, video, radio, and new media works. Programming includes annual retrospectives, curated programmers, and presentations of significant groundbreaking and legacy works.
imagineNATIVE plays an important role in the dissemination and exportation of Indigenous works by promoting and exhibiting artists’ films, videos, radio, and new media artworks. It connects these artists and their works to Canadian and international festivals, markets, distributors, and broadcasters and by facilitating sales and acquisitions. It also provides Indigenous filmmakers, media artists and curators with professional development opportunities in the form of workshops, panels, mentorships and other activities geared to enhancing creative and professional skills.
