Capturing Pokémon with Oculus Rift
In the long list of classic games being revamped to be played in virtual reality, Pokémon recently joined the bandwagon.
Fans of the insanely popular Nintendo game have created a demo version of Pokémon that is compatible with Oculus Rift’s virtual reality headset. No more pressing buttons and navigating with controllers; now you can pick up a Pokéball with your own hands and throw it wherever you want to aim! Pokémon for virtual reality still has a lot of kinks to be worked out; the game is far from perfect. Animations in battle oriented games are still very limited and players can only view one encounter from the same angle each time. Magnemite is shown hiding in a bush, for some reason only the developers know. Some text is fuzzy and unclear, the graphics are not very stable at times, and some of the details are either missing or just too vague to make out.
Despite all these kinks, fans of Pokémon are crazy excited about the new demo version released for Oculus Rift. All these weaknesses should be acknowledged and set to rights but meanwhile, this is the only chance fans have of being able to visit a 3D version of the Johto Region. A whole generation practically grew up with Nintendo’s Pokémon so it appeals to people of all ages. This is just a fan based demo at the moment, but there are huge, endless possibilities of what Pokémon could be like if actually developed as a full-fledged version for Oculus Rift’s virtual reality headset.
Besides using the Oculus Rift virtual reality equipment, the game also makes use of Leap Motion controllers to navigate the motion sensor technology with their chosen Pokémon. Voice Attack has also been enabled in the demo version so players can tell their avatars verbally to attack their enemies. Pretty convenient feature, that’s for sure. According to most critics, this virtual reality demo of Pokémon reminds them a lot of Nintendo’s “Hey You, Pikachu!” which was discontinued after a while. Since that has been discontinued, demo versions of virtual reality games like these are the only chance fans have of dreaming about what a next generation Pokémon game will be like.
The Pokémon demo developed for virtual reality is free for download but will require an Oculus Rift headset to be able to play the game. It is not backed or created by Nintendo; it has been created by fans of the classic video game. Virtual Reality Times will keep you updated with the latest updates.
