Form Has Launched $200 Augmented Reality Swim Goggles
Form Swimwear, a leading sports technology concept company, has just announced the launch of its premium Form Swim Goggles with a see-through AR display that will allow athletes to visualize their performance metrics in real-time when swimming.
Retailing at $199, the AR swim glasses have been developed over the past our years. FORM Swim collaborated with top coaches and competitive swimmers (including top Olympians) in the design and development of the glasses. The glasses have been designed to enable athletes to have an engaging, smarter and more purposeful training performance at all levels.
The see-through augmented reality displays will show users how they are performing in timed swimming races in real-time. Competitive swimming is one of the biggest sports in the world. In the US alone, there are more than 30 million active pool swimmers so the tech is targeting a very vast customer base.
It is also quite revolutionary in the way Form Swim has developed a display-based technology for an underwater sport. Most of the innovations that deliver real-time performance metrics via devices such as running watches or bike computers are for land-based activities and sports such as biking, walking and running. The existing wearables for underwater sports such pool swimming currently hinder the technique and do not provide a means through which one can access the metrics in real-time. The innovation of the Form Swim AR Goggles is therefore quite revolutionary in its ability to address some of the pain points in the older or pre-existing devices.
The Form Swim Goggles will incorporate the following key components:
- An AR display which has been integrated into the lenses of the goggles. This display will offer swimmers an unobtrusive see-through experience which will always be in focus for the wearer.
- A miniaturized onboard computer: The miniaturized onboard computing system is highly compact with more than 16 hours of battery life. The onboard computer utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to track and deliver displays of metrics such as distance, stroke count, split times and the stroke rate.
- Premium design: The swim goggles have a premium design that has been built with high-grade materials and cutting-edge manufacturing processes for greater durability, optimal fit as well as hydrodynamics in the design such that the AR goggles will feel like any other regular pair of swim goggles.
Also launched alongside the swim goggles is the Form Swim App for both Android and iOS. Swimmers and coaches can use this app to review and even share the workouts that have been record by the Form Swim Goggles. They can use the app in tracking their progress over a period of time and in tracking the precise metrics that the goggles will display. It also enables users to see when the metrics are to be displayed: for example, should it be when swimming, after making turns or during rest.
This device and the app will come in handy for those swimmers competing at the elite level where the performance metrics are measured down to the hundredth of a second.
For both coaches and professional swimmers, access to real-time metrics is quite the game-changer. They will both be able to track what’s happening in real-time. Even if you are not a professional athlete, the Form Swim augmented reality device makes the exercise a lot more engaging and fun. Trainees will be able to constantly compete and challenge themselves to the limit.
Form Swim was founded by the sports tech entrepreneur Dan Eisenhardt who is also a former NJCAA competitive swimmer. As a professional swimmer, he chanced upon the idea several years ago but it is only now that he has been able to develop it into a working product thanks to the advancements in the tech. He previously ran a sports augmented reality eyewear brand known as Recon Instruments which was later acquired by Intel four years ago. Many of the employees in his previous AR sports eyewear company are now working in Form, bringing forth their years of experience in designing and developing premium sports eyewear, augmented reality optics and activity-tracking algorithms.
The Form Swim Goggles begin shipping on August 7 to international markets for a retail price of only $199 and will be ordered from the company’s website. The accompanying app can also be downloaded for free on both Google Play and iOS on the same day.
