Amazon Prime VR App Comes to Oculus Quest
There is already a bevy of streaming apps that users can pick on the Oculus platform such as Oculus TV, Hulu, Netflix, Showtime and Red Bull. The palette is about to expand with the addition of the complete Amazon Prime Video catalog which will offer users a large curated selection of 360-degree content.
The Amazon Prime Video VR service has gone live not only on Quest but also on Oculus Go and the Samsung Gear VR with a dedicated Prime Video VR app.
Apart from giving access to the complete Prime Video catalog, the Prime Video VR functionality will also provide users with some select 360-degree videos. Some of the content that will be available during launch include ‘Greenland Melting’ from NOVA and Frontline, and ‘Invasion!’ from Baobab Studios.
The virtual reality app will give users a seamless option for watching the Prime Video titles within a virtual theater setting. The service will also have a voice search functionality for the whole Prime catalog. At this time, the Prime service will only be available to subscribers based either in the U.S. or the U.K. Users who aren’t Prime subscribers are still able to browse through their Amazon Video purchases.
Talk of Amazon making a move into virtual reality has been rife for quite some time. Some 2016 job offers gave the impression that Amazon was seriously considering producing original virtual reality content from its Amazon Studios. Amazon even hired Genna Terranova, the former Tribeca director, to help spearhead its mixed reality content development project. However, Terranova has since moved on to a more general role in Amazon Studios, indicating a de-emphasis on the virtual reality production efforts.
Once the app is activated, users are immersed into a brightly-colored cardboard city in which they can browse through the content on offer via an easy-to-navigate menu. To get an even better and more convenient experience, you can use the voice-powered search which allows you to browse the catalog based only on voice commands. Once you have found and selected the content you want, you will be taken back to a bare-bones virtual movie theater environment where you can adjust the screen size and position yourself for optimal comfort in readiness for an awesome viewing experience.
The Prime Video VR can be downloaded free on Oculus Go, Oculus Quest as well as the Samsung Gear VR. For more information on the app/service, check out Amazon.com/PrimeVideoVR.
