Airlines have always gone the extra mile to provide their customers with a superior onboard product, including in the in-flight entertainment department. For Iberia’s flyers, travelling is about to get more fun thanks to the airline’s introduction of inflight virtual reality entertainment.

The airline has partnered with the Inflight VR, a startup that specializes in producing virtual reality experiences for the tourism industry. From this week, Iberia passengers on the twice daily Madrid-New York and the daily Madrid-Tel Aviv routes will enjoy this new type of onboard entertainment on VR.

Passengers on the flights will be able to rent a VR headset as part of the airline’s duty-free shopping package for about EUR6 or $7 and then use these to access varied VR content including documentaries, concerts, games, city travelogues and other tourist guides among others and experience these in an immersive virtual reality environment.

Iberia will test the immersive experiences in the two routes before it rolls them out in the other routes. Alternatively, it could also convert the inflight VR experience into a fixed service for its  customers for a more experiential and exciting travels. Through virtual reality, the airline is planning to give its customers something of a journey within a journey. For example, the passenger may be taken on a VR tour of their destination city, thereby learning as much as possible about their destination city before they even reach it. This may help ease anxiety for travelers.

If the launch goes according to plan in the first two routes, the airline will launch the VR service in the San Francisco and Tokyo routes as well as in various medium haul and long haul routes.

The airline will avail the second generation Pico devices to its customers for rental during flights. Virtual reality holds great potential for the aviation industry and can drastically improve the passenger experience when offered as part of the in-flight entertainment package. The passenger is no longer a mere observer but a participant in the experience.

The airline has entered into a six-month trial agreement with Inflight VR and a decision on whether to scale up the service will be taken once the results of the trial phase have been assessed.
