Samsung is reportedly planning to release multiple virtual reality and augmented reality products according to a report on Variety. The report, quoting the company’s director of developer relations for mixed reality and gaming, Farshid Fallah, states that the tech giant is planning to release several new headsets in the next few months. Samsung’s stagnated Gear product line might also be among the products on the pipeline.

The remarks were made at last week’s Augmented World Expo in Santa Clara, CA during a panel where Fallah outlined the company’s AR and VR strategy mainly dwelling on the AR features that are coming to Samsung’s new Galaxy S10. The Samsung Galaxy S10 will also include an advanced depth sensor and a feature known as Bixby Vision which will enable users to identify and shop for objects when they capture them using their phone’s camera.

At the Expo, the presentation began with an exposition into Samsung’s early virtual reality efforts which started way back in 2015 when the tech company launched its original Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset. The technology has since changed quite rapidly following the launch of the Gear VR headset and better headsets have rolled into the market with superb specs. Fallah also talked about Samsung’s broader efforts with VR technology, its Samsung Gear VR headset as well as the AR capabilities that the company has incorporated in its Galaxy S10 phone.

Apart from its mobile virtual reality efforts, Samsung has since also launched two versions of a top-end virtual reality headset that are powered by the Windows Mixed Reality platform. Samsung has also experimented with head-mounted AR. Last year, the company unveiled an experimental AR headset during its dev conference. The headset utilizes the same software developer kit that was originally developed for Samsung Gear VR and is not available for sale to end users. At the Thursday Expo, Fallah hinted that Samsung’s Gear brand may continue in some fashion on its future AR and VR products.

Fallah stated that Samsung had “other plans for Gear” which is a welcome development given that the Gear brand has been put on ice for the past two years. The headset hasn’t been updated since 2017 even though Samsung has gone ahead to release other headsets such as the Windows Mixed Reality Odyssey+ in the recent months. However, the latest releases have been on the higher end of the cost spectrum.
